• A lo largo de los últimos treinta años, ha contribuido a la ciencia tanto en el mundo académico como el empresarial, así como brindado servicios en apoyo al estado y a la sociedad. En la vida académica, ha publicado treinta artículos de investigación original revisados por pares, en la especialidad de bioenergética mitocondrial y biología molecular. Su contribución esencial a los campos de la Bioquímica y la Biología Celular ha sido el demostrar que la hexoquinasa mitocondrial es la enzima responsable de conducir las altas tasas de glicólisis aeróbica características de células tumorales muy malignas y de rápido crecimiento. Desde entonces, la glicólisis aeróbica de los tumores malignos es utilizada clínicamente para diagnosticar y monitorear respuestas a terapia de cáncer registrando imágenes de la captación de 2- 18 F-2-desoxiglucosa (una forma de sustrato de hexoquinasa que ha sido modificada radiactivamente) mediante Tomografía de Emisión de Positrones (PET). En septiembre de 2005 publicó un artículo de investigación que demuestra que la asociación funcional de la glucoquinasa (una isoforma de hexoquinasa) al metabolismo mitocondrial y a la señalización celular apoptótica en hígado normal en realidad no es mediada por una asociación física de esta enzima con las mitocondrias o sus membranas.
